Opening reception for new exhibit “Through the Generosity of Others”

Please join us at the Clinton Historical Society at 1 Fountain Street on May 5th at 2pm for the Opening Reception for our new Exhibit “Through the Generosity of Others”. Our latest exhibit celebrates the generosity that supports the Historical Society. The three examples highlighted include, our new exhibit cases made possible by a generous bequest from the late Frank Lorenz, an 1838 coverlet donated by the heirs of Lucy Jones and a new Old Burying Ground Sign supported by a grant from the Hamilton College Town Gown. There will be short comments regarding each donation. The new exhibit cases and the lovely coverlet will be on display as well the history of the Old Burying Ground and details about the new sign. Refreshments will be served.

Marauder Man! The Stan Bird Story

Please join the Clinton Historical Society on Sunday April 14th at 2:00pm at 1 Fountain Street, Clinton as we welcome Wade Lallier who will present “Marauder Man! The Stan Bird Story”. It’s the account of a local high school sports star, Stan Bird, who became a pilot of a Martin Marauder B-26 bomber during WWII. Wade recounts Stan’s war time experiences including witnessing “Operation Market Garden” and his involvement in D-Day. Stan Bird was the winner of the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross, an award he received for flying his crippled bomber to and from a bombing mission over enemy territory.

Utica, an Olmsted City: Presentation

We will be welcoming Phil Bean on Sunday March 10th at 2:00pm for his presentation, Utica, an Olmsted City.

Phil will present an illustrated talk about the origins, creation, and restoration of Utica’s Olmsted parks and parkway system, as well the area’s Olmsted-designed neighborhoods.

Big News in a Small Paper: Important Stories from the Waterville Times with Publisher/Editor Patty Louise.

Ms. Louise is going to focus on the two big stories that have/will change the local community – Hockeyville in 2018 and the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant that was recently awarded to Clinton. She’ll be weaving in some history with each on both how they came about and what they will mean in years to come.

Patty has owned the Waterville Times since May 2001. In 2016 the paper began covering Clinton and Kirkland when the Clinton Courier ended. She grew up an hour west of Syracuse, went to Syracuse University earning an undergrad degree in journalism and an MBA. Pat Louise has worked for papers in Corning, Elmira, Utica and Syracuse before landing in Waterville.

September Speaker Program featuring Master Carpenter Dwight Dibble

Please join us as we kick off our 2022-2023 speaker program with a fascinating look at the renovation that transformed an 1832 former Baptist church into the Clinton Historical Society. Our speaker, Dwight Dibble, is a respected master builder and general contractor who will share stories of the months-long renovation project, its challenges and triumphs.

History Camp, August 1-5, 2022

With the support of a generous capacity-building grant from the Museum Association of New York, History Camp is back! History Camp is a popular summer learning experience for rising third through sixth graders. Under the guidance of social studies teachers, our activities encourage a love for history and promote learning about our community’s history. Preference is given to students of Clinton Central Schools. Attendance is limited so register soon! Registration deadline is July 23, 2022.

Annual Meeting, Monday May 9th, 7 p.m.

All members are invited to attend our annual meeting and to vote on new Board members (three-year terms), Officers for the next year, and important changes to our by-laws.

Scandals of Central New York!

Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz looks at events that made national news from the formation of Madison County (several of which touched on Oneida County) through the mid-20th century. His talk includes colorful tales and salacious stories of the famous murders, arsons, crimes and scandals in our region’s history. Our speaker was appointed Madison County Historian in April 2010, and serves on the Cabinet of Freedom for the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum and in numerous other history and preservation organizations. His articles have been published in multiple local and regional newspapers and magazines. The program will be in-person at our 1 Fountain St. location on Sunday April 10th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.

The History of Westmoreland

The Clinton Historical Society will host a presentation on the history of the neighboring town of Westmoreland, 2:00pm on Sunday, April 19, 2020 at the Clinton Historical Society, 1 Fountain St., The public is invited to hear first hand from town local Sharon Yager and other members of the Westmoreland Historical Society, about their town and it’s colorful characters and unique place in our local history. The program is free and open to the public, and all persons interested in the history of the area are invited to attend this presentation Clinton,NY.
